Why choose a RoHS compliant PCB?
In the PCB manufacturing industry, "RoHS compliant" is a term that is often used. You may often hear PCB and other electronics manufacturers claiming that their products are RoHS compliant. Most customers just know that RoHS compliant PCB boards add value to their applications, but they don't know the exact meaning and significance of the standard.
Are you a customer who regularly invests in several types of PCBs to assemble various electronic products? If yes, then it is important for you to know about the RoHS compliance certificate.
RoHS compliant
The European Union adopted the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) in 2003. The standard was created to restrict manufacturers from using six hazardous substances when assembling electronic products. Substances considered highly hazardous are:
l Cadmium (Cd)
l Mercury (Hg)
l Chromium (Cr(VI)
l Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
l Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)
l Lead (Pb)
The RoHS Directive restricts the use of these substances on wood, solder or surface finish materials.
According to the RoHS Directive, the acceptable levels for these substances are:
Mercury 0.1 wt% 1000 ppm
Cadmium 0.01 wt% 100 ppm
Lead 0.1 wt% 1000 ppm
Cr6 + 0.1 wt% 1000 ppm
PBB, PBDE 0.1 wt% 1000 ppm
When manufacturers say their PCBs are RoHS compliant, you can rest assured of unmatched reliability and quality. Most countries now strictly adhere to the RoHS directive, thus collectively contributing to the solution to the e-waste problem. This, in turn, contributes to environmental sustainability. In addition, compliance with RoHS largely reduces health hazards to workers.
Working with RoHS Complaint PCB Manufacturers
To reduce the impact and hazardous impact on people and the environment, most PCB manufacturers today follow the RoHS directive when assembling their PCBs. However, make sure your PCB manufacturing partner strictly adheres to this guideline.
